Zimmermann’s Spring/Summer ’20 Show Has Us Dreaming Of An Endless Summer

Beach waves. Six-pack abs. Higher hemlines. There’s no denying the power of this eternal trifecta. The Zimmermann Sisters, definitely know a thing or two about long, lazy summer days. Their clothes have a way of transporting us to the ethereal state of island bliss, and lends a comforting freedom to one’s imagination especially in these challenging, uncertain and isolating times.

Prints, lace and breezy flow. The Zimmerman aesthetic has remained constant, carrying the same spirit they began with three decades ago, when they first started off by selling at the Sydney Flea Market. Today they dress every cool fellow Aussie (we’re looking at you Margot Robbie), and even Kate Middleton (a sighting that sent cash registers ringing worldwide) in their designs.  Zimmermann has cemented their brand as the front runner in Australian fashion. Their signature aesthetic and elevated approach to design embodies relaxed resort style perfectly without coming across as repetitive.

Which brings us to the inspiration of their Spring/Summer 2020 collection: a 60’s surf documentary titled ‘Endless Summer’. What transpired in the clothing was beach culture in its most exciting form. Hitched hemlines, bright patterns intrinsic to the late 60’s and early 70’s aesthetic, they used surf-centric movie posters and magazine covers as a graphic print seamlessly weaving in a nostalgic pop culture theme through the collection. The use of gossip magazines as a pop art print was also a clever, playful jab at how contemporary fashion and media publications so willfully dictate trends and beauty standards across the globe.

From the Brightside Palm dresses and shorts in bright yellow lace, to classic blue gowns and textured white on white embroidery, the Spring/Summer collection seamlessly wove in the free, joyful but rebel child spirit of the 70’s while preserving the elegance of Victorian lace, crochet and craft. Their puff-sleeved dresses and modern silhouettes mimicked the flow of the waves in the runway backdrop. The wispy maxis with now-you-see-me-now-you don’t cut outs in tangerine and sunset capture the relaxed afterglow of a happy beach day. We recommend putting on a Zimmermann piece everytime you need some feel good dreaminess to uplift you on a gloomy day.
