Born in 1846, Loewe was an artisan’s collective that made accessories on Madrid’s Lobo Street. Narciso Rodrqiguez, José Enrique Oña Selfa and Stuart Vevers are some of the giants who helmed the brand until Jonathan Anderson took over. Loewe is a brand that’s not just been successful for crafting a bag that’s gone viral over TikTok. It is recognised by mavericks across the board. Zadie Smith to Timothée Chalamet identify with the Anderson’s creative vision. Spring 2016 is a season that highlights Anderson’s unabashed love for experimentation. Trousers and sleeves that appeared like plastic extensions to clothing were created by playing with PVC and synthetic fibres. The now-iconic Puzzle bag was presented in many iterations. Statement accessories took centre-stage.

Early into his career, Anderson like any young talent was trying to impress the audience with clothes that made watchers sit up and notice his thoughts. Innerwear made it out on this iconic checkered dress which opened the fall 2018 ready to wear showcase. A statement dress that was perfect for day or evening, that implied womanhood without baring anything? Genius.

Craft was the focus for spring 2020 where he turned his most dedicated audience towards lacemaking. The dainty fabric was deftly sculpted to create dresses inspired by the construction of gowns worn by Spanish royalty. Pre-Bridgerton, Anderson was already taking Recency era as a reference for costume play.

Spring 2023 menswear deserves an honorary mention on this list. Anderson who was trying to make a point on the hyper reality of the metaverse, juxtaposed technology of the future with something simple and organic. He collaborated with Spanish bio-designer Paula Ulargui Escalona who was experimenting with growing plants on fabric. Shoes to jeans and blazers, nothing was spared this unique verdant touch.

Spring 2023 womenswear also touched upon his relationship with nature and models walked down the runway in lifelike replicas of blooms sewn into clothing. The enabled anthuriums made from fibreglass and metal actually raised several eyebrows on whether these dresses could be categorised under clothing. Nonetheless, this remains one of Anderson’s best shows till date.
