#LeMillRecommends: Updating Your Fashion Podcast List

Conventional wisdom might say to let your outfit do the talking, but if the growing phenomenon of fashion podcasting is anything to go by, that’s only the start of the conversation. Whether investigating overlooked style cultures around the world, the day-to-day grind of working in the industry, or the urgency of addressing systemic problems from sustainability to racial inequality, fashion podcasters have quickly proven themselves to be among the most agenda-setting voices in industry media today. While we all have our trusty fashion podcast list, we urge you to update your list (or at least add something from below!)

Fashion Neurosis With Bella Freud

Bella Freud is following in the footsteps of her great grandfather, Sigmund Freud, otherwise known as the father of psychoanalysis — but she’s bringing a fashion touch. The acclaimed British fashion designer is challenging the perceptions about the fashion industry. With the desire to dispel the common belief that the industry is facile and one-dimensional, she created Fashion Neurosis. This filmed podcast contains thoughtful conversations in a relaxed and cosy room where, every week, the host—sitting in an ‘analyst’s’ chair—invites a special guest to ‘lie on the couch’ and answer questions about fashion and identity. From style icons to cultural figures in sports, art, music and literature, some of the guests include Rick Owens, Kate Moss and Jonathan Anderson.

Every Outfit by Chelsea Fairless and Lauren Garroni

Chelsea Fairless and Lauren Garroni started the @everyoutfitonsatc Instagram account as a joke eight years ago. Their passion project of digitally cataloguing and critiquing the fashion of Sex and the City has blossomed into an entire ecosystem that spans podcasting, publishing, merch and recently a live show.

Underpinning it all is the connection between two best friends. Listening to an episode of the Every Outfit podcast feels like catching up with your girls on a Friday night, cocktail in hand, ready to dish. Sharp and witty cultural critiques and impassioned views on fashion fly around as they share snippets from their casually fabulous LA lives. You can almost hear the gestures the make as they speak.

Wardrobe Crisis by Clare Press

Who makes your clothes? This used to be an easy question to answer: it was the seamstress next door, or the tailor on the high street – or you made them yourself. Today we rarely know the origins of the clothes hanging in our closets. The local shoemaker, dressmaker and milliner are long gone, replaced by a globalised fashion industry worth $1.5 trillion a year. In Wardrobe Crisis, fashion journalist Clare Press explores the history and ethics behind what we wear. Putting her insider status to good use, Press examines the entire fashion ecosystem, from sweatshops to haute couture, unearthing the roots of today's buy-and-discard culture. She traces the origins of icons like Chanel, Dior and Hermès; charts the rise and fall of the department store; and follows the thread that led us from Marie Antoinette to Carrie Bradshaw, Press takes us on an insider's journey of discovery and revelation.
