We expected an all-new Celine under Hedi Slimane but were we about get an all-new Hedi Slimane under Celine? That question was answered without a doubt with his debut.

In February 2018, he took over artistic, creative and image director duties at the 70-year-old French fashion house. Slimane has been tasked with introducing menswear – which he just did – couture, and even a fragrance is to follow.

The winds of change are well and truly here. In the course of replacing Phoebe Philo, Slimane put his firm stamp on the label. First, by erasing every post off the feed (and going so far as to take the products off the website). Then giving us a new (old?) logo, knocking off the accent from the erstwhile “Céline” and taking us back to the ’60s era logo. He then teased a younger Celine, filling the feed with tinsel, and waif-like models.
The first glimpse of his designs came with the bags. Structured and sleek, Le 16 was spotted on the arm of Lady Gaga and soon after, K Pop megastar CL was spotted with the Monogram C bag. Le 16 was also endorsed by K-pop heavyweight BLACKPINK’s Lisa, suggesting that Slimane might be courting a whole new audience after all.
The show titled Night Journal of Paris Youth delivered 96 largely monochrome looks, save for the odd glittery hint of silver or gold. Artist Christian Marclay gave us a dose of colour with the embroidered patterns he created for Slimane. All quintessential Slimane. If Philo’s minimal and pragmatic Céline sought a mature audience, then Slimane’s grunge-y and hedonistic Celine firmly explores the other end of the spectrum.
